Based on languages and oral history, the Comanche ancestors are Uto-Aztecan, who in the early 16th century lived in an enormous territory from the northern Great Plains and into Central America. The town motto, “Busiest Town, Friendliest People”, is a reminder of the slower-paced lifestyle still available in a few communities in this country. By 1900, they were able to conduct most of their business at border fairs in New Mexico in their own languages, and many of the people who came to trade with them were fluent in it.
